SOLD: Holbrook Model B No.8 Lathe. 4" x 20", backgeared with screwcutting gearbox, power sliding and surfacing feeds, automatic micro-adjustable disengage of the power sliding feed and taper turning.

This is a magnificent, not to say museum quality example of these superb lathes and is in virtually pristine, original condition. Built to very exacting standards, more information can be found here (the lathe is actually featured in that section, the grey one). Since acquiring it a few years ago (at which time I was told it had been bought new around 1937 and used solely for clockmaking/instrument work), I have used it little--and then only for delicate work and that little showed what a lovely machine it is. On health grounds I now need to downsize and it sadly has to go. Apart from a headstock bearing oiler system I fitted it's as originally supplied, complete on the maker's stand with new switchgear; two-speed gearbox and powered by a single-phase motor driving the built-on overhead countershaft. As part of the original equipment there is a separately motorised overhead drive for precision grinding spindle and other accessories. Accessories include: 2 chuck backplates; 3 and 4 jaw chucks (not fitted - as it came like that with both  the previous user and myself preferring to use the range of collets included); drive plate/catch plate; T-slotted faceplate; taper-turning attachment; a lever-operated tailstock in addition to the standard screw variety; original collet and accessory stand (to which I added a second tier). I also fitted it with a quick-change toolpost. Although compact this is a heavy machine - the lathe alone is around 200 Kg  and the cast iron stand with motor, gearbox, overhead drive gear, etc., probably add another 600Kg. The top face of the stand is finished like a surface plate! Definitely not a lathe for the spare bedroom. £2500

SOLD: Holbrook "Edgar" 5 inch x 21 inch backgeared and screwcutting lathe with swing bed and a built-on overhead countershaft unit.

As part of my exercise in preparing to downsize for health reasons I have to let this go. It was designed by Edgar Holbrook, hence its name, and manufactured at the Holbrook works in London. Designed to incorporate most standard features of lathes of the period plus a variety of novel ideas it was launched in 1923. Its high cost limited sales which ceased in the early 1930s--hence it's a reasonably rare machines compared with others of similar vintage. Full details at http://www.lathes.co.uk/edgar/  The most interesting feature is the separate swivelling front bed that carries the saddle and works as a built-in taper-turning attachment for long tapers ; the headstock and tailstock are mounted on the conventional fixed bed at the rear. The lathe has unusually large handwheels with easy-to-read micrometer graduations engraved on the edges. The graduated leadscrew handwheel is 8 inches diameter. Since acquiring it I have slightly modified the drive and fitted a new 3-jaw chuck but it's otherwise as it came. All the cosmetic work had been done and the spindle bearings are in good order.  I have used it little, mainly for making 2-Morse taper tooling, but it performs well and is very rigid as might be judged from the heavy proportions of the topslide. There is some backlash on the feedscrews (but then so does my Myford and one learns to live with it!). This lathe is one of few to survive complete with its overhead countershaft supports - these are very substantial and need a headroom of 2.15 metres (7 ft) - but that could be reduced by around 12 inches by shortening the belt and the support columns. (it is shown temporarily standing on wooden blocks). All this ruggedness makes it rather heavy, possibly in the region of 350 Kg. It has a drawer built in which carries the change wheels, a brand new 3-jaw chuck, backplate for a 4-jaw and a second backplate or catchplate; tailstock chuck. 1-phase electrics. A thoroughly useable and very interesting lathe. £550 Pictures of the Edgar lathe for sale here and details of Edgar lathes here
