WANTED: small lathe capable of metric screwcutting - Hopefully with a lot of accessories included to save some effort tooling myself up, so I can get stuck in straight away with the learning. Ideally, a belt-drive lathe which I will power from a 3-phase inverter. I will struggle to move the lathe, as I don't drive, so local to me in Glasgow is ideal. Please email: lathe@emilcarr.scot
For Sale: SIP MU-4R Jig borer / milling machine. When bought, this fine jig borer had been converted to a coordinate measuring machine but is now back to its original function using a Warco ZX-15 3 Morse spindle. No modifications were necessary to the borer save for the removal of the measuring probes holder (which is supplied) and using the original bolt holes to carry the head on the cross beam saddle. The 19" x 27" T-slotted table is unblemished, and a longitudinal travel of around 25". The cross beam carries a saddle on which the milling head is mounted; the head covers almost the full table width and is operated by a handwheel to give a travel of approximately 16-18". The distance between table and spindle nose is approximately 25". The table is traversed longitudinally by a large handwheel driving the leadscrew very smoothly through closely meshed gearing with barely detectable backlash. The table and saddle movements are covered by a DRO reading to 0.0001" and metric equivalent. There is no DRO on the down feed of the cross beam which is also controlled by a handwheel, operating through closely matched bevel gears and two feedscrews so it keeps its alignment parallel to the table. The upper ends of the feedscrews are normally protected by a tubular steel sleeve (currently removed due to headroom). Fine control of the down feed is on the milling head which has the options of screw feed for milling or lever feed for drilling. No doubt a digital readout device could be adapted to fit. The milling head can be angled 90 degrees on either side of vertical but the crude rivetted-on scale has been removed and is set by a digital clinometer with a magnetic base (not supplied but readily available). This can be set to zero on the table and then attached to the spindle when extended downwards, or other datum surface, and records the angular movement. The milling head has its standard 3-phase motor and the inverter to drive it is supplied complete with a remote control box attached to the machine While it's a superb machine and I was in the process of devising a motorised feed to the rather slow cross beam down feed - but time marches on and a house move looms. The buyer is welcome to the motor with reduction gearbox and the mounting platform made so far - it needs only a little work to finish. Also supplied is a large machine vice with 5" wide jaws and opening to 5" in 2 stages; various spindle tooling including 3 x shell end mills and arbors; Clarkson small autolock with 4 metric and 4 imperial collets and spanner; boring head; arbor for gear cutters; Jacobs chuck with key; various drawbars. The handbook is for the measuring machine but may be of some use. £2900 or offers. Email: peter@smithurst.org Pictures of the SIP jig borer for sale here

For Sale: A pair of unused André Bechler Swiss "Simplex" Gear and Pinion Engines. Priced for sale as a pair - but would split. The two machines were originally obtained still with their manufacturer's packing grease. One was commissioned by having a professionally-made motorised stand made, with pulleys and electrical equipment. That machine was cleaned and overhauled in preparation for the semi-automated production of horological (watch) pinions. The second machine still has all its protective grease in place. Both machines have been kept in a dry, indoor workshop - although the first has a slight bloom of oxidation on some non-critical surfaces; neither has been used, although the mounted machine has been run and tested in place. There's an extensive set of ancillary equipment included: division plates, an instruction/service book, and many manufacturer-supplied technical drawings. There are a couple of useful videos about the Simplex on YouTube. The machines appear to have been first sold to an American instrument company (COSA Corporation, New York) in the 1950s, and then later imported into England. £3500 or offers. Phone 07512-256530 (London SE16). Pictures of the "Simplex" Gear and Pinion Engines for sale here

As an example of the work undertaken, one arm of the casting supporting the back gear shaft was damaged; a new arm was grafted on (aircraft standard) then line bored and new bearings installed. With the lathe is a set of screwcutting changewheels, the original 3-inch 3-jaw chuck. a new 4-inch 3-jaw chuck with both inner/outer jaws, a backplate, tailstock chuck (0-13 mm), 4.5-inch faceplate, 2.25" backplate, a tailstock centre, the makers brass screw cutting data plate and a new tap and die to suit headstock spindle thread. £375 To arrange a viewing or for further information please telephone Godfrey Moore 01772- 719487 (Preston) evenings or email: humbermoo55@gmail.com Pictures of the Portass Model S lathe here and full details of Portass S lathes here
For Sale: MYFORD SUPER 7B LATHE 3.5" x 19" (serial No. SK160527M) with a screwcutting gearbox, power cross feed and a spindle clutch. Mounted on the maker's cabinet stand with levelling blocks and a deep chip tray. Purchased by me direct from Myford, Nottingham in 1983 or 4. It was once stored unused for ten years between house moves and has been used only for light work on model engineering. I believe this was one of the last Super 7Bs to be sold by Myford and was built entirely 'in-house', i.e. with no dumbing down with imported castings. Accessories include a 4-way toolpost, rear toolpost, catch plate and two face-plates, 3-jaw chuck, 4-jaw chuck, half-inch keyless drill chuck, and a thread-dial indicator. Single-phase motor with factory wiring and a Dewhurst reversing switch. The photographs show the very fine condition although there are a couple of small 'dings' from dropped chuck keys, etc. Other than that, a fair description would be "excellent". Unfortunately, the colour rendition on screen is not perfect, the lathe colour is original and 'as-new'. Buyer collects from Worthing, West Sussex. The lathe and cabinet can be readily dismantled into six or seven more manageable assemblies. All questions will be answered promptly, and any inspection and testing are welcome by appointment. £2750 Pictures of the Myford Super 7B for sale here and details of Super 7 lathes here. For Sale: a new John Stevens watch/instrument maker's milling machine. Complete with drilling quill, horological 8mm spindle and ER collet spindle, machine vice and all the necessary tee bolts, allen keys, chuck key, spare drive belt, adjustable 24volt power supply and various other parts. There is a movable and flexible light system also included. The machine comes with a 5C collet indexable headstock that can be driven via a rear pulley to enable turning when mounted on the rear table. Standard 5c collets (not included) of up to 1" can be used for turning or gear cutting, etc. This item is not a substitute for a lathe, but is nevertheless a most useful addition. The main table has a single tee slot, measures 9" x 3.5" and has a 4.5inch. In addition to the screwfeed, there is a lever feed that can be disengaged. The leadscrews are 2mm pitch and have anti-backlash nuts. The spindle can be raised to a height of 9.5". Speeds up to 6500 rpm are achieved via pulley changes and a variable speed controller. The machine is constructed of solid cast iron - in the traditional way - and has a footprint of 9" x 9" x 16" and a weight of approximately 35 kgs. This is a very versatile machine and can be set at almost any position or angle. With the use of the knuckle joint, almost any angle is achievable - many are demonstrated in the photographs. The spindles can be used in either horizontal or vertical mode and most of the attachments used in an off-hand manner - an extended 30mm spigot to facilitate this is included. (this spigot can also be used to extend the various attachments). The photographs should give a clear indication of all aspects of the machine but feel free to call me and ask any questions that you may have. Location Uxbridge West London You are very welcome to view the machine in person. Asking price £3250. For Sale: Schaublin 102N lathe - a late-model example and mounted on the correct maker's cabinet stand with storage. The bench top measures 150cm x 80cm and the height 85cm. Overall bed length is one metre. The headstock has built-in indexing with four sets of holes: 12, 48, 60 and 100. The lathe comes with an extensive set of accessories: a Schaublin high-speed milling and grinding spindle; 38 metric collets ranging from 1 to 20mm; plus 6 hexagonal bar collets; 6 square bar collets; a 2 Morse taper adapter; dead and live centres; Tripan SMD quick change toolpost (with ten-micron repeatability claimed - which is about right in my experience), and a Pratt Burnerd 100mm BP71 chuck with internal and external jaws. The lathe is powered by the original three-phase motor fitted with a Direct Drives one-to-three phase converter, sine filter and a variable speed controller - this integrates into the Schaublin two-speed forward and reverse switch box and gives a very wide range of infinitely-variable spindle speeds. This is a beautiful lathe to use, the cross-slide is sensitive, taught, and with very little backlash. One feels perfectly confident working on small jobs close to the collets. Occasionally, I have even attached stereo microscopes for ultra-precision work. This lathe is in phenomenally fine condition and has been used only for light horological work Viewing is highly recommended. £9000, with sensible offers considered. £9000 of sensible offers.
