This later Weisser is typical of an 1930s precision bench lathe as first made from 1862 by Stark in the U.S.A. Usually of 3 to 4-inch centre height (75 to 100vmm), and offering around 15 to 20 inches between centres (380 to 500 mm), they were originally equipped with a hard headstock spindle, ground and lapped and running in twin bearings of a similar material. By the 1930s, when this Weisser would have been built, many were being fitted with special ball or roller-race headstocks to allow continuous high speeds for production work.
