Shown below and on the following pages is a Wadkin "condensed" catalogue set as issued by the Company from the 1950s onwards - it is not complete but will be expanded over time. In addition to the brief details shown here, Wadkin also issued a highly detailed and well illustrated catalogue for each model, some running to twenty pages and showing every aspect of the machine's capabilities and functions (in some cases a Wadkin catalogue will tell you more about a machine than the operating manual) Further Wadkin catalogues are listed alphabetically on this page and can be obtained here.
Founded in Leicester in 1897, Wadkin grew rapidly through the 20th century to become one of the world's leading makers of wood machinery. At its height the concern involved some sixteen subsidiaries and employed over 1800 people, the main factory being a 20,000 square foot facility - the Green Lane Works--where a vast range of woodworking machines were built in a thirteen-bay production and assembly plant. In the early 1950s, the factory employed over seven-hundred staff and, by the 1960s over nine hundred. During the latter decade production numbers rose to over 5000 machines per annum, the models manufactured covering virtually all requirements of the professional wood-working shop with each heavily built and superbly constructed from first-class materials.
Still made, Wadkin machines can found world-wide in general woodworking businesses, production plants making all manner of items in wood - and also large numbers by those constructing patterns used in the casting industry. Some Wadkin models, notably the renowned and widely employed W-Series pattern millers, were designed to tackle both wood and metal machining.
