Very rare indeed - the 6.76" centre height by 36 inches between centres Tyme "Classic" is seldom found, with only a handful known of what was an expensive machine.
The design and construction of the Classic are both at odds with all other Tyme UK-manufactured machines. Instead of being built up from small castings for the headstock and tailstock, with steel bars employed for the bed, the "Classic" has a very heavy bed in cast iron and cast iron legs to support it.
Might the "Classic" have been imported from Taiwan, like the Tyme 941017, a Taiwanese-built copy of the American Shopsmith? The writer does tend towards this point of view, the cost of patterns to make the Classic would have been considerable and, unless semi-mass produced, the machine would have been uncompetitive against the many similar machines already on the market. Another clue is the use of a CE (Conformitè Europëenne) mark on the headstock, something not found on any other Tyme lathe but common on imports from 1985 onwards.
