Stima AMC Model RAC The Stima "REP" and "RAC" were 9.5-inch centre height production lathes, very like the "560" (and with the same bed) but stripped of screwcutting equipment and, if in "RAC" specification, fitted with an automatic cross-slide return. The models should be identifiable by the letters "REP" and "RAC" cast with the "AMC" logo into the headstock-end drive cover and sometimes the right-hand face of the stand. The aim of these two versions was to allow one operator to be responsible for several machines at once, it being unnecessary to observe the automated machining process and only load and unload the work-pieces. Of the two types the "REP" model was the basic lathe (but available in the same three bed lengths as the "560") with the "RAC" better specified and fitted as standard with chrome-plated bedways - but only produced in one short-bed, 800-mm between-centres version. However, in order to fulfil its potential the "RAC" was, like most of its kind, required to be fitted with a variety of accessories to suit particular jobs; these included: a motor and gearbox unit mounted at the tailstock end of the bed that allowed a variety of cycles to be set up including the rapid return of the carriage; a hydraulic tailstock for the quick centring of parts; a hydraulically-operated 3-jaw chuck; a "multipass reproducer" that could decrease the diameter on one end of a part before the final pass; a carriage with a stop system that could make grooves positioned longitudinally to within 0.02mm; an over-ride button that switched between manual and automatic positioning and a "rapid-return" button that had priority over other functions to make the reproducer go back and bring the saddle back to its start point.
The drive system was identical to that outlined for the "560" but with a 10 h. p. motor providing 11 instead of 22 speeds from 200 to 2000 r.p.m. or, alternatively, 160 to 1600 r.p.m. As an alternative, if the customer so desired, motors of 8 or 15 h.p. were also available. 8 rates of longitudinal feed were available: 0.05, 0.074, 0.1, 0.141, 0.18, 0.25, 0.36 and 0.51 mm per revolution of the spindle with the power cross feed rates set at half those figures..
