The full title of this lathe was the "Rivett Manufacturers' Lathe No. 5". Based on the No. 4 machine but of a heavier build it was designed as a very robust, accurate machine for use by commercial machinists in an environment where the very fine quality of a Rivett Precision lathe would have been wasted. From those surviving it appears to have been fitted from new with a full compound slide-rest assembly and screw-feed tailstock as standard with a vast range of accessories available to convert it to a multitude of machining tasks as supplied for the No.4 and similar models.
