Left: travelling steady. Right: instead of a traditional 3-point fixed steady the Pittler was provided with a special boring collar identical to that used for decades on ornamental-turning lathes. This had a ring of pre-formed, tapered holes carried on a disc that could be rotated into position. Its use was as a steady, when boring into the end of a job, and had to be provided with the lathe when new to ensure absolute accuracy of alignment.

Fixed steady. The base clamped round the bed whilst the upper section carried a pair of V slides designed to accept home-made guides in metal or wood to steady or support the work.
