Oliver No. 21 Combination Pattern Lathe. This two-and-a-half ton lathe was designed to allow the turning of ordinary work between centres and also to accommodate very large and long cylindrical patterns. In order to provide a satisfactory range to cover the needs of such widely-differing jobs, a two-speed 7.5hp/5hp motor and countershaft drive gave 36 speeds from 18 to 1800 rpm. Both the usual type of simple hand-tool rest and a rack-feed carriage assembly and compound slide rest were provided, the latter running along a bedway which could be pivoted through 360 degrees on the top of a moveable, box-section, cast-iron column; this arrangement, besides allowing a great deal of flexibility as to the placing of the cutting tool, also allowed long tapers to be turned with great accuracy.
