Early Jones & Shipman grinding machines and tool and cutter grinders were manufactured in two forms - very early models being driven by belts from overhead line shafting or wall and ceiling countershafts and later types by built-in electric motors. By the late 1930s the two types overlapped - their still being a strong market for the early models where a company was reluctant to dismantle their original set-up but also for those who could see that the future would be governed by self-contained machines that could be moved around very much more easily to form and more efficient production process.
The two catalogues below - and on the following pages - show both types and the transition between them, it being clear that many of the models were very similar but just adapted as necessary for the type of drive chosen by the customer. Oddly, although Model Numbers were used to identify most of the belt-drive machines, the self-contained. Electrically-driven ones were listed using an older - though still contemporary system - of code names such as ITHA and MUNT.
