Pictured below is an XLO lathe, sold in Germany by a branch of the Canadaian Ex-Cell-O Corporation of 120 Weston Street, London, Ontario.
Ex-Cello-O was, at one time, a major manufacturer of machine tools and produced many specialised and advanced machines including milling machines, horizontal double-spindle boring machines, form, thread and tool grinders, profiling machines, lapping machines, grinding spindles and a host of other ancillary precision engineering equipment. Unfortunately in November, 1985 manufacturing ceased and in 1986 the Company stopped trading.
Little is known to the writer about the Ex-Cello-O lathe shown, other than it looks to have been current from the late 1950s into the 1960s and was a well build and specified machine. Ex-Cello-O had Companies registered in Canada, the United States, Germany and India, so the origin of the lathe is unknown - though it does have the look of a machine  by the German VDF and WMW Groups. To avoid some part of the import duties that would otherwise have been imposed, VDF exported lathes to Canada in a knock-down form - might this lathe be part of that scheme? The letters "DLZ" were also used on machines made in the former East Germany by WMW, WMW Niles, "Union" and VEB. As the controls on the headstock of the lathe below are similar to some of those by WMW, there is a strong possibility that they were concerned with the branding of the lathe as an Ex-Cello-O.
Part of a group of other lathes including the DLZ500, DLZ600 and DLZ800, the DLZ 400 had a centre height at 400 mm (8 inches) to match its Catalog number, a distance between centres of 1500 mm (59 inches) and spindle speeds from 28 to 1400 r.p.m. As far as is known, no Ex-Cello-O lathes were ever imported to the UK and, so far, nothing in the way of sales catalogs or manuals have been found for them.
