A backgeared and under-driven version of the Boley 4LE arranged for fine feeds to the carriage - but not screwcutting. Drive from the end of the headstock spindle did not pass to a set of screwcutting changewheels, but by a 2-step V-pulley to a simple gearbox that held pairs of pick-off gears. With four fixed-ratio pairs able to be swapped over from the drive to the driven position, the arrangement gave a choice of 7 feed rates. The gears pairs able to be swapped over were 55/65, 45/75 and 85/35 with, in addition, a single pair of 25/90 that could only be arranged one way to give the finest feed of all. Boley offered a very wide variety of models based on their No.4and this could well have been listed a less-expensive "production lathe", these having power feeds but lacking the sophistication of full screwcutting.
