Based closely on the design of the Model "0", but suitably enlarged and strengthened for heavier-duty work, the Adcock & Shipley Model "1" horizontal miller was a particularly popular machine and built in a variety of specifications. However, all used a large number of common parts, the main differences concerning the type of table and its feed system, the arrangement of the knee feeds and the way in which they operated under power. For example, besides a normal power feed to the table in one direction one option was to have a semi-automatic set-up where the movement of a single lever initiated a cycle of: - fast approach, change to cut-feed rate, rapid return and stop. The fast approach and return feed were at approximately 200 inches per minute and the ten feed rates varied from 0.005" to 0.044" per revolution of the cutter spindle. In total, six different table-feed systems were available, divided into "Power Feed" and "Hand Feed" Ranges. "Power Feed" - with 27" x 7" table: This was available with combinations of the A & S "Multiform" Semi-Automatic Cycle, normal Power Feed and a Fully Automatic Cycle. "Hand Feed" - with 24" x 7" table: Here the machines could be equipped with one of three choices: "Lever, Lever, Lever Feed" - where all movements, longitudinal, transverse and vertical were actuated by rack and pinion with positive stops and locking devices - "Screw, Screw, Screw Feed" - all movements were driven by screw threads operated by ball handles actuated by rack and pinion with positive stops and locking devices. "Lever, Screw, Lever Feed" - with longitudinal and vertical movements by rack and pinion but the transverse by screw. Four speed ranges were available, of which the most useful, the "A" with a 1420 r.p.m. 2 hp 3-phase motor and backgear, had eighteen speeds of: 50, 64, 79, 100, 125, 157, 200, 250, 312, 400, 510, 630, 790, 1000, 1250, 1590, 2000 and 2500 r.p.m. The most basic set-up was used on the "B" Range with a 720 rpm 2 hp 3-phase motor and six speeds of: 125, 200, 315, 500, 800 and 1250 r.p.m. The "C" Range employed a 960 r.p.m. 2 hp 3-phase motor and had twelve speeds of: 165, 210, 250, 300, 380, 480, 575, 690, 900, 1100, 1360 and 1650 r.p.m. The "D" Range was given a faster motor than the "C" - 1420 r.p.m. - and supplied: 250, 315, 380, 460, 575, 710, 870, 1050, 1370, 1700, 2060 and 2500 r.p.m. A plain vertical head (without a quill feed) was offered an option; it used the same slideway as the knee and was dropped into place from the top and driven by twin V belts from a pulley mounted on a stub arbor carried in the horizontal spindle..
