A subject of Imperial Russia, Mr Mates Witart's patent concerned either a new arrangement of a traditional watchmakers' lathe, or an attachment that might be applied to an existing one that "...combine in a compact and convenient manner with an ordinary lathe, means for tapping, milling and other cutting such as is commonly necessary for watch and clock makers…" Of some ingenuity but considerable complexity, from examining the drawings, the attachment could have been applied - with some substantial work - to an existing lathe, though doubtless one designed from the outset to accept it would have been the better solution. The accessory required a lathe bed to be mounted on an elevating column, with the main part of the attachment carried on a mounting block at the rear. Unfortunately, Witart's proposition must have fallen on deaf ears, for not even Clement - an American maker noted for supplying an extensive range of interesting attachments, was tempted to add it to their list of accessories..
