Montanwerke Walter AG in Tübingen, West Germany were specialists in tool and cutter grinders with, for example, by the mid 1980s offering a very wide range of models including the Types 20, 20AY, 20AZ, 30AY, 30AZ, 30CY, 30CZ, 30QC, 40CY, 40CZ, 40CQ, 50CY, 50CZ, 50CQ,  UWS20, UWS30, UWS30CQ, UWS40, UWS50, Copytronic-501, and Helitronic NC. Today the Walter Company still prospers and offers a range of advanced of CNC-controlled machines.
Manufactured during the 1960s, the AMS-500 was, for a tool & cutter grinder, a massive, 3600 kg (7900 lbs) and complex machine tool. Able to grind cutters with diameters from 80 to 600 mm (3.5" to 23"), to aid the otherwise rather hazardous mounting of what could be very heavy parts, the makers wisely offered, at extra cost, an electric hoist able to lift, on its swinging arm, loads of up to 400 kg (440 lbs).
Feeds were hydraulically controlled and driven by a 3 kW (4 h.p.) motor; the total power consumption being - with the addition of the 2-speed (1.1/2.3 kW (h.p.) spindle motor - 7.5 kW (10 h.p.).
