Unknown Miniature Shaper No. 189

Unknown Lathes Home Page

Beautifully constructed, this tiny shaping machine was obviously home-made by somebody with access to not only a foundry (the castings look to be especially fine) but also a well-equipped machine shop. Just 12" wide, 11" deep and standing only 9.5" to the top of the 27/8" stroke ram, it appears that the aim of the clever maker was to construct (to a very high standard) a miniature yet fully functioning machine.
The builder managed to get all the internal parts completed, the crank pin was fitted with a needle bearing, the slides provided with adjustable gib strips and provision for lubrication and the table's ratchet cross-feed mechanism made functional. Unfortunately, he never managed to finish the job - for still it requires a box table making to hold the work, as well as a table feed-screw handle, a mechanism to raise the table and an input feed pulley.
This charming little machine reminds the writer of a small lathe of unknown provenance that was also constructed to the same standard - though perhaps one even higher. Like the lathe, one might have though that the builders would have copied an existing, full-size machine, but this a appears not to be the case - for the writer cannot bring to mind any of exactly the same design. Can you?
