A lathe introduced during the 1980s, the TOS SUI-32 was the smallest of the SUI range. With a centre height of 160 mm - and 190 mm over the 250 mm length of bed cutaway in front of the headstock - the lathe could be had with a capacity of either 750 or 1000 mm between centres. Each version was able to take a load, held on centres, of up to 90 kg at the slowest spindle speed.
With a bore of 38 mm, the headstock spindle ran in a double-row roller bearing at the front and in a pair of matched and preloaded angular contact ball races at the rear- all being lubricated by grease.
Power came from a hinged-plate mounted 3-phase, 4 kW motor running at 1400 r.p.m. and driving by V-belts into the all-geared headstock. The drive passed, as on all SUI models, through two multi-plate clutches - these doubling to act as a spindle brake. The drive arrangement gave a most useful range of 18 spindle speeds from 20 to 3150 r.p.m. It appears that the option of a variable-speed motor was also available, though details of this cannot be found.
The screwcutting and feeds gearbox, totally enclosed against the ingress of dirt and turnings, provided 48 longitudinal rates of carriage feed from 0.01 to 3.24 mm/min - and 48 in cross-feed at 0.005 to 1.624 mm/min. 'Rapids', as fitted most long-bed and larger machines, was not available - nor necessary on so compact a lathe.
Screwcutting was arranged to provide 26 Metric pitches from 0.25 to 20 mm; 42 Whitworth ( inch) pitches from 1 to 80 t.p.i.; 22 Module from MD 0.125 to 10 and 42 Diametral from DP2 to 320.
The SUI-32 weighed when specified with 750 mm between centres, approximately 1460 kg.
