Other Tool & Cutter Grinders
The 1960s saw the increasing use of 'industrial design' that - with machine tools - saw a breakaway from the traditional "rounded" design of castings to ones with angular features, colourful appearances and the application of 'ergonomic' thinking by newly established 'design studios'. A machine first built in March 1966, the Tacchella 4LS universal tool & cutter grinder followed this trend - this still modern-looking machine being manufactured by the Tacchella Company in Acqui Termi, Via Cassino 32, a town to the SE of Alessandrai in Italy.
Alongside the 4LS shown on this page, other cutter grinders were also offered including the 3L, 4L, 4M and 60P. Other machines manufactured at the time including the multi-purpose grinders with hydraulic horizontal drive types 4AM and 6ALP; a multi-purpose automatic grinder with fully automatic horizontal and vertical movements the type 6AP; tool grinders for use with edge cutting tools (and inserted carbide tips) for lathe and planer use; the rough grinding machine SP; several machines for finishing chip breaking types LP; the BU10, BU15 and BU20 to sharpen round and flat broaches and a range of hydraulically-controlled universal and production grinding machines.
Founded by Andrea Tacchella in 1921, the Tacchella Company first manufactured milling and grinding machines and grew steadily until the 1940s. Following WW2, Tacchella concentrated exclusively on grinders and tool and cutters grinders and, in 1967, opened a new factory in Cassine. Today the Tacchella still thrives and is part of the large Taiwanese-based FFG (Fair Friend Group) the world's third largest machine tool manufacturing organisation with (in 2024) 94 companies, 37 machine tool brands and operating 50 factories in 10 countries..
