A popular design of tool and cutter grinder offered in kit form by Blackgates Engineering. As designed, the motor is hung off to the side of the column but a better solution, as proposed and executed by some builders, is to put it aboveor, alternatively, to swap the positions of the motor and spindle horizontally, this placing the spindle much closer to the centre of the table and table travel.
The machine below has a couple of detail differences from the Blackgates design: a stop added to restrict the travel of the carriage and a cover over the screw thread. In addition a guard has been fitted over the grinding wheel, the owner being somewhat alarmed by the shower of sparks spraying around his tinder-dry wooden work shed..
