"Southwark" Capstan Lathe
Little is known of Southwark lathes other than during the 1940s and early 1950s they offered the No.2 capstan lathe, a machine of conventional design and, based very closely upon it, the "Monkton High Production Sliding and Surfacing or Second Operation Lathe" (shown at the bottom of the page) . While the sole surviving known catalogue gives a number of interesting technical details, the background to the Company remains a mystery. However, as the publicity literature puts both the "Southward" and "Monkton" names in parenthesis (a common ploy at the time to indicate a factored item) it's highly likely that this was not a manufacturer but an agent of dealer.
