Scott, Sinclair & Co. Shaping Machine circa 1842
Not what would be called a "Shaper" today (the term being reserved for machines with a sliding ram), the mechanically-ingenious Scott Sinclair was really a backgeared lathe adapted - rather along the lines of the more modern Scope ) to become a multi-function machine. Although the illustrations below are crude, the description deserves close study for it shows that the cutting tool could be moved parallel to the lathe bed, at an angle, vertically and rotated. It would be very surprising if an example survives.
