Rossia Lathe

An entirely conventional lathe from the period 1895 to 1910, the 125 mm centre height Rossia shown below is one of only two known. Backgeared and screwcutting, with power cross feed and a flat-topped, detachable-gap bed, the lathe could have been manufactured in almost any European country - although the tumble-reverse lever is very like those on German lathes of the period (the tumble gearing was also on the inside, left-hand face of the headstock, a position increasingly adopted by makers in the early years of the 20th cenyury). The "balanced" handwheels (if original), guarded backgears and neat thrust bearing arrangement on the end of the hollow spindle would tend to put the lathe later into the suggested period, rather than earlier.
The front saddle wings were of considerable depth with each (and those shorter ones at the back) carrying a T-slot and the cross slide positioned exactly midway between them
If you have a Rossia lathe the writer would be interested to hear from you.
