Founded in London during 1793 by a German immigrant, John Jacob Holtzapffel, the Holtzapffel company was to became pre-eminent amongst the many makers of high-quality ornamental turning lathes. The firm stayed in the hands of Holtzapffel's direct decedents until 1896 after which demand for their specialised products began to decline.
