A..E. Herbert Pty. Ltd. were located in Birmingham Street, Alexandria (a suburb of Sydney). Their products included ordinary centre, capstan and wood lathes, a 1.25" capacity backgeared drilling machine and no doubt other machines as well. In the Sydney Morning Herald for the 22nd of March, 1952, they advised that: The famous A.E.Herbert 0.75" and 1.25" capacity capstan lathes are again available for early delivery. In the same paper, on the 25th of February, 1948, an advertisement (not by the Company) offered: an A.E.Herbert automatic lathe, 0.75" capacity, practically new. Interestingly, the copy used the full Company name, no doubt to distinguish the machine from the similar ones made by Alfred Herbert Limited (Coventry, England) whose Australian subsidiary Alfred Herbert (Australasia) Pty. Ltd. imported a comprehensive selection of the parent Company's products. Alfred Herbert capstan lathes were made in Melbourne during WW2 by A. G. Healing Ltd., a well-known manufacturer of radios, radars, and related test equipment. An example of a Healing lathe survives in the collection of Museum Victoria (Melbourne). It appears, from the few pictures so far found, that the traditional backgeared and screwcutting centre lathes must have been made from the late 1920s until the early 1950s. Similarities design of early and late examples are clear, with only minor tidying of details visible and the use, on what must have been post WW2 examples, of full-sized, sheet-metal cabinet stands replacing the former cast-iron legs. If you have a Herbert lathe, or any information about the Company, the writer would be very interested to hear from you..
