Just as, during the latter half of the 20th century, many Far Eastern manufactures copied Western designs of all kinds, in the late 1800s the success of the American Webster Whitcombe watch lathe (the type is known as the WW) caused factories in Europe to develop their own versions - and this is how the Hammel & Riglander came about. A well-known supplier of materials and publications relating to watch and clock repair, Hammel, Riglander & Co. would almost certainly have sourced their lathe from Germany, with production by either G. Boley or Lorch - though the most  likely appears to have been Leinen, the latter a Company who also branded their products "Boley & Leinen" - although they had nothing to do with the quite separate Company of G. Boley. According to the Ward Goodrich book "The Watchmakers' Lathe" the Hammel & Riglander was: "...having a considerable sale in America, although it is made in Europe".
Fitted with a traditional WW-type bed of heavy construction with a flat top and bevelled edges to locate the headstock, slide rest and tailstock it is likely that the lathe would have been offered with various bed lengths, the shortest supported on a single foot (as shown below) and the others on a pair.
Holding 8 mm collets the headstock spindle ran in adjustable cone bearings - through with the addition of a ball race to take thrust. a 4-step cone pulley was fitted, to take the usual round belt, with a ring of 60 division holes drilled in the outer face of the largest diameter.
