Once a major American maker of high-class surface and tool & cutter grinders, Grand Rapids grinders had an excellent reputation of quality and accuracy with one experienced owner saying "I think the Grand Rapids is a world-class machine and one would be hard-pressed to find a past or present surface grinder better. Likely none made today are as good." Gallmeyer & Livingston Co. was created in 1923 by the merger of the Valley City Machine Works, the Grand Rapids Grinding Machine Co., and the Union Machine Co. An existing connection between these companies being that Charles Henry Gallmeyer had been a partner in the Valley City Machine Works and served as its president until 1923. In 1964 a catalogue for the No.60 and N0.62 tool & cutter grinders celebrated 50 years of grinder production, so putting the start of that enterprise as 1914. Unfortunately, by 1999 it was all over with a flyer from the Auctioneers and liquidators Norman Levy Associates announcing, "By order of the Board of Directors, assets of Gallmeyer & Livingstone Company will be offered by auction on Tuesday, December 14th." The rights to trading, etc, were then acquired by Leland-Gifford Products who continued, for some years to provide parts and service for the grinders.
