Go-ahead Lathe

The "Go-ahead" lathe was probably of American manufacture and based on a round bed of cast iron with a rectangular groove cut down its rear face that was used to locate the headstock, tailstock  and other bed fittings. Supplied as standard with the lathe were three bed bars of  8, 10 and 12 inches length and a "large quantity of attachments" including a compound slide rest, a Universal Head and an apparatus for polishing and snailing - a form of decorative marking created with a lap charged with oil stone dust and oil. Also available was a range of of the usual watchmaker's lathe accessories including chucks, a centering cone, pivoting disc, special cutters and collets, etc.
