George Adams Type GA 11/2" lathe. Although of the lighter "Geneva" pattern (in comparison with the heavier Webster Whitcombe (WW) type, this nickel-plated model is a more heavily built version and designed for heavy-duty applications where it would be subjected to the rigors of production or very high-speed use. The headstock, which accepted Size L 6 mm collets, was of the "all-hard" kind with spindle and bearings manufactured from high-speed tool steel and able to run continuously at very revolutions. However, an owner reports that his example takes 8 mm collets - ones identical to those in his B.T.M lathe. If a choice of 6 and 8 mm collets was offered, or the 8 mm lathe was a later example, is not known.
Built on something of a cross between a WW and Geneva pattern bed, the centre height of the DA 11/2" lathe was reduced to 1.5" and the accessories the same as those designed for the lighter WL Geneva-Pattern lathe illustrated on this page. Although shown in the sales brochure with a simple T rest, the GA 11/2" was supplied as standard with a compound slide and could, in addition, be ordered in a number of fitted boxes complete with various accessories, from just a few of the basic king to a very wide and comprehensive range. In its basic form it cost, in the early 1930s, £8 - so making it more expensive than all but the best equipped of the longer-bed WW types..
