Hydetsco Hydraulic Shapers
Claimed to be "British made", Etsco shapers are something of a mystery for no UK maker of such a name can be traced. None of the Etsco sales catalogues in the writer's collection carry any name or address and, as far as can be established, the shapers bear no resemblance to any other known UK maker such as Alba, the Alba "copies" from Newey, Butler, Churchill, Crowthorn, Graham & Normanton, or Invicta - or, indeed, any continental maker shown in the Shaper Section of the Machine Tool Archive. The only known connection with name "Etsco" is the "Etsco and Heivil" lathes marketed in the 1920s by the still-trading Percy Martin of Leicester, a company well know for importing machines tools from around the world.
