Pre-1906 Drummond Flat-bed with
Bed-mounted Shaper
Probably by Arthur Frith (and later Tom senior) this type of neat and well-engineered lathe-bed-mounted shaper attachment was a popular accessory in the late years of the 19th and the early years of the 20th centuries. Driven from a flange-plate, bolted to the lathe's standard faceplate, the unit's stroke could be adjusted easily and a range of suitable speeds obtained through the lathe's backgear. However, although this assembly would have worked well with a flat-belt drive, in the case of the Drummond illustrated below, the round "gut" rope would have limited the performance somewhat - as would the fact that it was treadle-operated.
