Introduced in the early 1990s, the modern and powerful Colchester Mascot VS-2000 and Mastiff VS-1800 lathes followed the early models of the same names by being almost mechanical identical save for their centre height, spindle bore and speed range.
With a centre height of 230 mm, the Mascot VS-2000 could be had with between-centres capacities of 1000, 1500 or 2000 mm and was equipped with three speed ranges, all infinitely variable between their upper and lower limits of 20 to 225 r.p.m., 60 to 675 r.p.m. and 175 to 2000 r.p.m. Motor power was 11kW (14.75 h.p.), the spindle bore a useful 76 mm and the nose fitting a standard D1-8 Camlock.
Using an identical bed, slideways and screwcutting gearbox as the Mascot, the Mastiff 1400 was available with beds that gave between-centres distances of 1000, 1500, 2000 and 3000 mm. As for the Mascot, the three infinitely-variable three speed ranges of 10 to 200 r.p.m., 55 to 605 r.p.m. and 160 to 1800 r.p.m. were driven by the same 11kW (14.75 h.p.) motor. 
A screwcutting and feeds gearbox of comprehensive specification was shared by the two lathes, this giving 73 English pitches from 2 to 84 t.p.i., 51 metric from 0.2 to 14 mm, 27 diametral from 8 to 72 t.p.i. and 20 module from 0.2 to 3.5 mm.
Sliding feeds varied from 0.04 to 2.84 mm/rev (0.0016 to 0.11 inches/rev) and surfacing at exactly half those rates at 0.02 to 1.4 mm/rev (0.0002 to 0.044 inches/rev).
