Buffalo Forge - USA

Buffalo 12-in-one Woodworker Page 2

Buffalo Forge were based in the town of Buffalo, N.Y. and best known for their range of forges and forging equipment; they also manufactured a range of metal cutting and forming equipment including power presses, punches, shears, bar cutters, drills, anvils and anvil tools, vises, saw benches, bandsaws, hand jointers, single and double wood surfacers (planers), grindstones and wood-turning lathes sold under the "American" brand name.
One particularly interesting product was their 1916-model 12-in-one Woodworker, a development of earlier machines produced from 1902. It was designed to be used by up to 3 operators at once and driven, through a fast-and-loose pulley system, by either an electric motor, overhead line-shaft or stationary engine. To run the various elements simultaneously and effectively a motor was recommended that needed to be "
no more than 5 h.p."  The various mechanisms were engaged through lever-operated dog clutches but, because it was so useful a workshop tool and likely to be in frequent use, the bandsaw was arranged to be powered in isolation with no other parts rotating. Although not as massively constructed as wood-working combination machines of later decades it was still a substantial unit with an all-up weight of just under 1 ton. It was based on two long U-section girders with the bolt-on 6' 6" by 4' 4" saw table, bandsaw elements and support legs in cast iron.
The lathe part of the machine was capable of the usual between-centres' wood turning, boring, drilling, sanding and grinding whilst other parts consisted of a saw bench, bandsaw, spindle moulder (shaper in the USA), mortiser (jointer) and (because they were still in widespread use) a device to mount horizontally and index spoked wooden wheels.

The drive to the saw bench was by a flat belt passing over a jockey pulley that provided a considerable extra wrap round the large driving pulley.
