Buffalo 837 Ram-Head Vertical Milling Machine
- Seiki 837, Microcut G/V-2000 and 837i and Wells Index 837 -

A manual is available for the Buffalo milling machine

A straight copy of the Bridgeport  Series 1 turret milling machine, the Buffalo Model 837 is also known to have been marketed as the Seiki 837, Microcut G/V-2000 and 837i and Wells Index 837. With all the well-known attributes, versatility and user-friendly facilities of a Bridgeport, the Buffalo must be counted as one of the better copies, owners reporting them to be not only well finished, but also accurate and reliable. A simple clue to the quality of a Taiwanese-built machine is the state of the rulers and degree scales used. If a maker has taken the trouble to have them crisply engraved and mount them accurately using a snug, flat fixing - you are in with a chance of buying something pretty decent.
Precise specifications varied from brand to brand, through UK-market versions appear to have been fitted as standard with the extra-long 48-inch x 10-inch table (the more-usual specification was 42 inches). They were also fitted with finitely-variable power feed to both longitudinal and traverse travels with the two automatic knock-off stops, held in a full-length T-slot running along the front face of the table, each had a useful screw adjustment to allow an exact setting to be achieved. As fitted to all long-table and late-model standard Bridgeports, twin table locks were provided in the form of decently-long levers.
A 45-degree forwards-and-backwards nodding facility to the head was supplied as part of the normal specification - though it appears that there was no provision was made at the rear of the ram (as on most Bridgeports), to mount a slotting head. The quill had the usual power up-and-down feeds and by hand through a wheel for fine travel and a lever for quick-action drilling - the R8 spindle nose taking the vast range of inexpensive Bridgeport tooling.
Although the Buffalo was offered with just one head, fitted with a 2.h.p. 3-phase motor, the 837 had an unusually wide and effective speed range - in backgear from 60 to 500 r.p.m. and in direct drive 500 to 4200 r.p.m.
Standard equipment included centralised lubrication from a hand-operated pump mounted on the left-hand face of the column, coolant (with a tank incorporated in the base casting) and a halogen light unit. One item that seems to be missing from all the UK-market models was a chip tray - hardly a deal-breaker..
