Broadway Universal Tool & Cutter Grinder
Known to have badged the Clausing 100 lathe as their own, little is known of the Broadway Company with their status as a manufacturer, dealer or distributor impossible to track down. A recent discovery badged "Broadway" was the machine below, a compact universal tool and cutter grinder arranged like the more familiar and much larger Jones & Shipman 310. Likely to have had the same capacity as the Excel No.5, and also able to be used as an ordinary surface grinder, the Broadway carried its grinding wheel on a head mounted on a swivelling and rise-and-fall column. The main sliding table was fitted with a swivelling sub table that, when equipped with the appropriate accessories, allowed a wide variety of tool and cutter and other grinding work to be undertaken.
Unfortunately, no technical literature has survived concerning these machines and, while the possibility exists that it was indeed manufactured by Broadway (the maker's name is cast into the body of the machine), it could well have been an import.
