Combination journal-truing and axle-lathe with three independent carriages and centre drive - a special lathe designed for use in railway workshops where an axle, complete with its wheels, could be mounted between centres and both the inside and outside of the journals turned at the same time. 25 hp was fed initially to a 30" diameter, 8.5" wide flat belt pulley on the end of the lathe and from there by a shaft which ran down the back of the lathe bed, in four bronze bearings, to the centrally positioned, "hinge-open" drive head. With the head open (it could be fitted with cable-suspended counterweights) the axle and wheels, or axel forging, could be dropped into place, the head closed and special equalising drive dogs - designed to accommodate the imperfections in the surface of a rough forging - employed to drive it. Three speeds were available, from 25 to 44 rpm.
