Looking to have a mechanical arrangement akin to that found on a chase-screwcutting attachment, the simple but ingenious Bastler was intended for use on both metal and wood and capable (with extra attachments) of simple turning, boring, drilling and possibly threading. Shown as a hand-cranked model, it was also possible to motorise the lathe. Only one photograph below shows the adjustable cutter holder with a suitable tool inserted, in the others the screw-action clamping bar is just parked. With a serial number of 918 - and assuming a start at 101 - it seems that a significant number were sold. "Bastler" in German means a home hobby worker or tinker and, as this version is called the "Bastler A", there may have also been a larger "Bastler B" for the more ambitious - or indeed other, more complex versions. If any reader has a Bastler lathe, the writer would be interested to hear from you.
