Still available from the makers, www.baldwinmachineworks.com, several dedicated glass-drilling machines are available. The 16 lb BM-41 drill, with a powerful suction cup of patented design, was invented in 1947 and is certainly the longest-lived and the best-known of its type. Available with either a fixed head as the BM-41 or one that swivels as the BM-41S, it has been sold re-branded by various companies. A particularly powerful patented suction cup allows it to be mounted not only on glass but on any hard, non-porous surface.
Drive for all models of Baldwin drills is provided by a 2500 r.p.m. 110-volt AC motor in either single or variable-speed forms. Their spindles run in sealed-for-life ball races and all are equipped with a 3/8" capacity key-driven chuck that, with the correct cutting tool, allows holes up to either 6 or 7 inches in diameter depending upon the particular model.
In addition to the suction-clamped models, a second free-standing type is also available, this having a tripod-mount with rubber tips on the legs and available in four versions: the BM-3V (with the same variable-speed motor as the MB-41 but able to drill holes up to 7 inches in diameter); the BM-3V-HD variable-speed, heavy-duty; the less-expensive BM-3S with a single-speed motor and the BM-3S-HD, also a heavy-duty type but with a single-speed motor.
Baldwin also manufactures a range of abrasive and other products to assist with the cutting of glass, tiles and associated materials.
Variable-speed models are easily recognised by a speed dial on the top of the motor with all single-speed versions lacking that fitting.
