Still in business, the Swedish Arboga company make a range of bench, pillar and radial-arm models. The design has long been unusual in that all models, even the lightest, eschew the usual 'motor-at-the-back-with-V-belt-drive' for the exclusive use of powerful, all-geared heads. While some early models used "pick-off" gears - gears that were arranged in pairs and had to be manually and inconveniently swapped over to change the spindle speed - most had changes made by lever control. One serious disadvantage of the design was the motor--this being built into the casing and so impossible to unbolt and replace. However, the design did lend itself to the development of a range of small vertical milling and "milling/drilling" machines - these using - combined with well-made, non-elevating compound tables - heads from the standard drilling machines - details of these millers can be seen here.
The drills were to be steadily developed and refined during the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s and, even though comparatively expensive, continued to find a market amongst those requiring a high quality, rugged and reliable machine tool.
