Manufactured during the 1960s and 1970s first by a Company called Marf and then by Wirth, Geruffat & Maped (WGM) from near Annecy in the Haute-Savoie region of France near Switzerland, the "Baby" milling machine was well-specified and heavily constructed. Wirth et Gruffat still exists and currently (2012) builds CNC machines while Maped produces educational accessories.
Of conventional design but robust construction, the Marf had a 340 x 110 mm table with two 8 mm T-slots and travels of 240 mm longitudinally, 110 in traverse and 110 mm vertically, though the last increased to 160 mm without the swivelling vertical head (which took Schaublin 12 mm collets and whose bevel gears ran in an oil bath). Flange mounted to the rear of the main column, the 3-phase motor drove directly to the spindle by three "A" section V-belts - the maker offering the customer, according to the speed chart, a choice of five units that ran at 3000, 1500, 1000, 750 or 450 r.p.m. to give speed ranges that started at a low of 275 to a maximum of 5400 r.p.m.
It is likely that a range of three machines was offered: Senior, Junior and Baby. However, as non appear to have been exported to the UK, details are sketchy but some data is available here:
